Let's start at the very beginning - CBD Basics

🎵🎵🎵Let's start at the very beginning

A very good place to start

When you read (our blog) you begin with C-B-D🎵🎵🎵

CBD is short for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

What does CBD do?

We have a receptor system in our bodies, called the endocannabinoid system, that is tasked with maintaining balance in many body functions with heavy receptor populations in our brain, digestive track, and skin. CBD modulates the endocannabinoid system and also helps maintain balance in other body systems (including multiple other receptor systems and our endocrine system).

What is CBD used for?

Properties that CBD has been shown to have:

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Antioxidant

  • Analgesic

  • Muscle relaxant

  • Cellular restorative and regenerative

  • Anti-biological

  • Neuroprotective

  • Anxiolytic

  • Mood-elevating

  • Nootropic

  • Adaptogenic

  • Immunomodulatory

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Lowers blood sugar

  • Regulates appetite

  • Anti-epileptic

...and, more...the endocannabinoid system is throughout the body and CBD also interacts with other body systems!

Will CBD make me feel high?

Unless a topical CBD product is a true transdermal product, topical CBD will not make a person high. Despite some Google search results, oral and inhaled CBD is psychoactive, but not psychotropic. CBD has mood-altering properties (lifting, calming, anxiety reducing…), which make it psychoactive. CBD, however, does not create a psychotropic effect (walls melting and conversations with things outside our regularly perceived reality) like very heavy doses of THC can.

How much CBD do I take?

Lighter doses of CBD (5-10mgs) are energizing and mood-lifting, but (for a few) can energize to the point of feeling anxious (like one too many cups of coffee). If a lighter dose doesn’t feel right, either a heavier dose or microdosing are two solutions.

Heavier doses (30-50mgs) are relaxing, mood-calming and can increase drowsiness (usually around hour 2-3 after dosing). If a heavier dose creates undesired drowsiness, microdosing is another option.

Microdosing (.5-1.5mgs) is a great way to avoid any perceived negative side effects of light or heavy doses of CBD, but the benefits will take longer to observe (2-4 weeks).

Oral CBD oil onsets at about 20 minutes, peaks around hour 3-4, and wears off after about 6-8 hours. It can be taken 1-4 times a day.

Topical CBD onsets anywhere from 1-10 minutes and lasts about 2-4 hours. It can be applied as needed.

CBD should be taken 2 hours around drugs that are also metabolized in the liver
